Jasper County Recorder's Vacancy

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors will appoint a new Jasper County Recorder to serve an 11-month term, ending December 31, 2026.

The appointment will be made on January 27, 2026. 

Any interested person should submit a cover letter, resume, and letters of reference starting today, January 2, 2026, by emailing their packets to Dennis Simon, hr@jasperia.org, Brandon Talsma, btalsma@jasperia.org, Thad Nearmyer, tnearmyer@jasperia.org, and Doug Cupples, dcupples@jasperia.org.

The appointment must be made 30 days after the vacancy. For that reason, any interested person should have their resume packet emailed by January 16th by 4:00PM. The Board of Supervisors will conduct interviews on the afternoon of January 20th and make their decision that same day. The appointment will take place at the Board of Supervisors meeting on January 27th.

Special elections cost between $15,000 and $20,000. Because of these costs and the duration of the position, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors believes it is best for Jasper County to fill the vacancy by appointment.

Public notice is given by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors of their intent to fill the vacancy of Jasper County Recorder by appointment pursuant to Iowa Code section 69.14A(2)(a) on January 27, 2026. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors also notifies the electors of the county that they have the right to file a petition requiring that the vacancy be filled by special election. Signatures on the petition calling for the special election to fill the vacancy of County Recorder must be received within 14 days of the appointment and shall be filed in the office of the Jasper County Auditor, 101 1stSt. N. Room 202, Newton, IA 50208. The petition shall contain a minimum of 2,020 valid signatures. Eligible electors must live in Jasper County, be at least 18 years old and not be a felon.
