October Fire Safety Storytime

October is Fire Safety Awareness month, and the Library is hosting a special Storytime for ages 3-5 (siblings are welcome) on October 3 at 10:30 am. The Newton Fire Department will have a Fire Truck at the Library for kids to see up close, and Fire Marshall Jacob Halferty will share a story with us and is bringing his Canine Crisis Companion dog, Marshall, to the event.

Make A Scarecrow Day

The event is come and go - so feel free to come anytime between 10 am and 4 pm and leave when you need!

Bring your family and friends to create a one-of-a-kind scarecrow for Newton Arboretum and Botanical Garden's Second Annual Scarecrow Walk! All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring anything you want to incorporate.

This year's theme is "Where's your Cardinal?" ALL scarecrows must incorporate a cardinal in some way, so get creative!

Halloween Bingo

Are you ready for some spooky fun? We're hosting Halloween Bingo on Thursday, October 10 at 6:30PM at and AYB in Downtown Colfax! ThisCocina Hernandez is our October Colfax Bingo night, but we want you to dress up in a fun costume! We will be giving out a free wild card for anyone in a costume and we will also have prizes for the best dressed! Local realtor Heather Rawlins will be our local celebrity bingo caller!

To play is $1 per card per round (Cash Only). We will also be playing fun rounds for local prizes! Winner of each regular round will win half the pot while the other half is a fundraiser for the Colfax Main Street program! We will also have some spooky treats!

Baxter Shooting Sport 1st Annual Trap Shoot

MiDiv Time Trials Championship Series (tentative)

We are proud to announce the 2024 MiDiv time trials schedule. There still are a few things in the works, but wanted to get this out to you for planning purposes ASAP. You will notice a few changes for 2024. There are more 6 session weekends then ever before ! The July High Plains event with Rocky Mountain region is a great way to experience the Iconic Colorado track. Hallett and Iowa Speedway are coming back to the schedule. Last but not least, We have added endurance racing this year at Hastings and Hallett. Looking forward to a great year.

Second Annual Tour de Pumpkin Bike Ride

This year, the ride will start by the bison sculpture in Prairie City's Entryway Park, travel over to Monroe and then return back to Prairie City. An additional "Bison Loop" to the Neil Smith Prairie Refuge is being offered those wanting a longer and more challenging ride.

Ride at your own pace, enjoy the fall scenery and make sure to check out everything that Prairie City and Monroe have to offer!! All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Friends of the Red Rock Prairie Trail for trail improvements and necessities.

Halloween Hike " The Sound of Music" by Jasper Co. Conservation

This is a fun and educational, not scary, event featuring musical skits performed by Newton Community Theatre (NCT) actors. Hikers will meet friendly characters along the trail, learn about nature and the environment, and listen to some familiar and fun songs!

This year we are very excited to have performers from “The Sound of Music” production that was held at NCT last June. Listen as the hills come alive with the sounds from nature at six different stops along the trail!

Hour-long hikes will begin at 6:00 PM and will depart every 15 minutes. Each time slot can accommodate around 25 hikers. The last hike will begin at 8:00 PM. Families with young children are encouraged to come earlier in the evening.

The hikes will end with the very popular blacklight animal tracking. The Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will serve hotdogs and s’mores at the campfire. Popcorn and drinks will also be available.

Youth under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission: free-will donation to Jasper County Conservation.

Free community movies is just one way UWJC works to offer opportunities for individuals and families to have a better quality of life. The 8th Annual YMCA Family Fall Festival will be October 25th 6-8pm.

Come in costume to Trick or Treat at the trunks and enjoy some indoor activities like inflatables, face painting, a floating pumpkin patch and MORE! Maybe even meet a Disney Princess or two??
