Voices of Inspiration Featuring Carson King

Voices of Inspiration: United Way of Jasper County Speaker Series launches with guest speaker Carson King on Thursday, April 4.

King, a Jasper County native, is known as the "need beer money" sign guy who went viral and raised more than $3 million for University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospitals. Because of his experience and ton continue his philanthropic work King founded the Carson King Foundation.

King will share his story at the 325-seat state-of-the art auditorium at DMACC – Newton Campus. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The event is open to all with a free-will admission collected to help continue and grow the speaker series.

“Voices of Inspiration” is presented by United Way of Jasper County with support from Dodd’s Trash & Recycling, Pence-Reese Funeral Home, Jessica Lowe Vokes & Erik Vokes, Mark & Emily Allen and DMACC-Newton Campus.

“Voices of Inspiration” will feature engaging speakers who will inspire, motivate and inform the audience. The series aligns with the mission of United Way of Jasper County, which is to uplift and empower the community, and promotes life-long learning.

Spring Book Swap

Clean out your bookshelves and pick up some new-to-you books at our spring book swap! Drop off your gently used books at the library April 1 - 6 and pick up a book swap ticket for each book you bring in. Bring your tickets back on April 8, between 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. to pick out new books from the swap to take home! Books should be in good condition, very clean, and gently used. Voices of Inspiration Featuring André Allen

The United Way of Jasper County is launching its new "Voices of Inspiration: Speaker Series" and is excited to announce former professional football player André Allen will be the featured speaker on Thursday, April 11.

André Allen grew up in King-Irvin neighborhood during the critical time of a heighten crime, drug trafficking and prostitution. He moved from the country side of Itta Bena, Mississippi, to the low-income living in Des Moines, Iowa, but he dreamed of one day living a life where his environment would not negate his position in life. So after graduation he accepted a full scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa where he became one of the most feared Linebackers in the game of football. After graduation from college his dreams of joining the NFL became a reality as an undrafted free agent to the Philadelphia Eagles. After a two-year bid in the NFL, Allen’s career carried him to World Football League for the London Monarchs. He then played for the Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. Allen currently holds a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa & B.A. from Hamilton Business college and a Masters of Business Administration/Technology Management from the University of Phoenix. In addition, he carries other certifications and leadership trainings.

The Gala | Mercy One Newton Medical Center

MercyOne Newton will be hosting the 12th annual Gala on Saturday, April 20 at the Thunderdome in Newton. This fundraiser co-sponsored by the MercyOne Newton Auxiliary and Foundation will feature social time, dinner, dessert auction, live and silent auctions, plus a few other fun activities.

Social time with a cash bar begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. All funds raised at this year’s Gala will go toward the purchase of new equipment for our operating rooms.

Voices of Inspiration Featuring Carol Kramer

The United Way of Jasper County is launching its new "Voices of Inspiration: Speaker Series" and is excited to announce long-time Newton resident Carol Kramer as the featured speaker on Thursday, April 25.

Kramer is an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and a life-long conservationist and educator. She was born on the White Earth Reservation in Northern Minnesota and raised by my Anishenabey parents. Kramer graduated from Bemidji State College. She and her husband Rev. Fritz Kramer were married in 1956, and moved to Newton in 1966 to raise their family. During their time in Newton, they were active in many groups, volunteering thousands of hours, and hosting dozens of foreign exchange students, campaign workers and other visitors to stay in their home.
​Kramer shared she was involved in “too many things” to list but includes Jasper Conservation Board, Iowa State Dept. of Natural Resources, Project AWAKE Board, Military Academy, Skiff Auxiliary, Willowbrook Day Center and Mitchellville Women’s Correctional Institute, along with many political offices, church involvement.

Kramer will share her story at the 325-seat state-of-the art auditorium at DMACC – Newton Campus. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The event is open to all with a free-will admission collected to help continue and grow the speaker series.

“Voices of Inspiration” is presented by United Way of Jasper County with support from Dodd’s Trash & Recycling, Pence-Reese Funeral Home, Jessica Lowe Vokes & Erik Vokes, Mark & Emily Allen and DMACC-Newton Campus.

“Voices of Inspiration” will feature engaging speakers who will inspire, motivate and inform the audience. The series aligns with the mission of United Way of Jasper County, which is to uplift and empower the community, and promotes life-long learning.

Iowa River Hospice Support Group

Join Iowa River Hospice to share and discuss caregiver support, grief support, advance directives and legal questions, and healthcare decision-making for yourself or your loved ones.

This monthly support group is ideal for seniors, families, and caregivers. Support group meetings take place on the last Tuesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. at the Newton Public Library.
